Issue 29: August 10
Dear Dr. Schelling,

My mother in law’s dog was just diagnosed with cancer. The only symptom was that he was vomiting occasionally and losing weight. My own dog vomits occasionally. She is 4 years old and is otherwise in good health. Should I worry?

-Linda

Dear Linda,

In young dogs like yours, vomiting is often benign and self limiting. She may be eating something that doesn’t quite agree with her (fatty treats, rich table scraps, or nasty unmentionables picked up from the back yard or the woods). She may have a mild food allergy or a treatable condition called Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Click here to learn more about the causes and treatment of vomiting in dogs. And if you’re still concerned, it’s best to contact your veterinarian.
