Dear Dr. Schelling,

Is it safe? Painless?

- Cautious with my Canine

Dear Cautious with my Canine,

I recommend microchipping in combination with giving your dog a collar with an attached ID tag. The former provides permanent ID and the latter provides visible ID. The combination substantially improves your chances of being re-united with your dog if your dog should get lost. Microchipping is very safe, and virtually pain-free as best we can tell. Reported side effects are rare and mild. For more information on the why's and how's of microchipping your pet, and what microchips can and cannot do, please consult this article, MICROCHIPPING YOUR DOG
