ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My veterinarian told me that my dog has prostatitis. I was upset at that time because my little dog was so sick, so I didn't really ask any questions. What is prostatitis, and how can I keep my dog from getting it again?

–Preventing Prostatitis

Dear Preventing,

Prostatitis is an inflammation and infection of the prostate gland in male dogs. It occurs most commonly in those dogs that aren't neutered. It can be a serious condition when it occurs acutely (in the short term), and some dogs become extremely ill when they get it.

You can learn all about the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of this infection here: "Prostate Infection in Dogs: Prostatitis."

Dear Max,

I found out recently that I was adopted. My humans told me they got me from a shelter when I was a puppy. I'm so happy they did because I love my family. I do find myself wondering sometimes about my canine parents, especially what breeds they might have been. Is there any way for me to find out?

–Mutt Musings

… … … …

Dear Mutt,

I'm so glad you found your furrever home and that you're happy there! It's normal to wonder about your canine family sometimes. While you may never know exactly who they were, your humans can have a test done that can help find out which dog breeds are in your background.

You can learn more in the article "Canine DNA Testing."

Max's Mini-Reviews

COMBATX BOW TIE DOG BONE TOY: I am a gentle soul, truly I am. But sometimes I like to play a little roughly with my toys. My CombatX Bow Tie Dog Bone accommodates all the rough-and-tough play that I can throw at it. It's amazing how tough it is because it's also really soft and doesn't hurt my mouth at all when I'm chewing at, tugging on, and throwing it around.

CHARMING BALLOON SQUEAKER DOG TOYS: These toys are so cute that I almost don't want to slobber on them. Almost. Every time I decide to just sit and enjoy their cuteness, the memory of their softness and squeakiness overcomes me, and I can't help myself; I have to grab them!

Just For Fun: This Month's Canine Horoscope
Pisces (February 20-March 20):

Pisces

If your dog is a Pisces, you're probably aware that he is loyal to you, almost to a fault. He often won't let you out of his sight, and his emotions seem intrinsically tied to yours. If you're sad, he's blue, too; if you're happy, he's joyful along with you. Your Pisces dog may get his feelings hurt easily, so be sure to treat him gently. After all, he is your best friend.
