ASK DR. SCHELLING

DEAR DR. SCHELLING,

My puppy started limping yesterday, on a rear leg. I didn't see him hurt himself and I can't see any problem with his paw but he holds it up most of the time now. Should I take him to the veterinarian right away or can I just wait and see if he gets better in the next few days?

–Gimpy Gus

Dear Gus,

There are a whole lot of things that can cause a puppy to start limping. Some of them are minor and may go away with time but some are serious and can get worse quickly if they aren't addressed right away. It's always best to have a limping puppy looked over right away by a veterinarian. If it's not serious, you'll be on your way again in no time. And if it is a bigger problem, you'll be glad you didn't wait.

Dear Max,

My human keeps tickling my toes while I'm sleeping. When I wake up, he says, "You were twitching and growling like crazy; were you having a seizure"? I have no idea what a seizure is, but I usually just remember chasing squirrels. What's up with him waking me up all the time?

–Dreamy and Disturbed

… … … …

Dear Dreamy,

What your human is wondering is whether or not you're having a medical problem while you're asleep. We dogs sometimes make a lot of crazy movements and growly noises while we're sleeping and the humans might interpret it as distress and want to check on us. But you're probably just dreaming!

Have your human read, Do Dogs Dream, so he can learn about what might be going on with you during snooze time.

Max's Mini-Reviews

ZANIES SUGAR PIE DOG TOY: Squeak toys are just the best, aren't they? What says "love" better than a pink heart with a bunch of little white hearts on it? I can fetch and squeak away at this heart as much as MY heart desires, because it is super durable.

PLUSH LOVE HEART DOG TOY: I "heart" this toy! It reminds me of how dear I am to the hearts of my humans. Plus, it does great double duty by being squeaky and fun to chomp on, but also soft and cozy for cuddling with at bedtime.

RHINESTONE HEART DOG TAG: This rhinestone dog tag is as shiny as I am! I love it so much because I always think about my humans when I feel it jangle on my collar. They even put a picture of us together in it just to remind me of how much they love me!
